Wisdom teeth, also known as
third molars are the last teeth to erupt. This occurs usually between
the ages of 17 and 30. Not everyone will need their wisdom teeth
removed, however if these teeth have heavy decay or are impacted
(growing in an abnormal way) they can pose a potential problem in
the future.
How Is a Wisdom Tooth Removed?
At most times a wisdom tooth that is fully erupted through
the gum can be removed as easily as any other tooth. When a tooth
is partially erupted, it becomes a surgical extraction. The gums
and bone would be cut to expose more of the tooth. Once a sufficient
amount of tooth is exposed it can be lifted and pulled out, or the
tooth can be extracted in small sections rather then in one piece.
Once the tooth is fully removed, the gums may be stitched up and
left to heal for 2 weeks. |
